Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

But plans to introduce bilingual road signs featuring both the English and te reo Maori languages have sparked a divisive, racially charged debate ahead of the country’s looming general election. Slightly less than a quarter of New Zealand’s 892,200 Maori speak te reo Maori as one of their first languages, according to the latest government data. Part of the reason that te reo Maori is not so widely spoken is that back in New Zealand’s colonial era there were active efforts to stamp it out. The Native Schools Act 1867 required schools to teach in English where possible and children were often physically punished for speaking te reo Maori. “The primary objective of these standards is to guarantee that all road signs are unambiguous, uniform, and legible to all,” he said.

New Zealand cancels flights as deluge from cyclone looms
  + stars: | 2023-02-12 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins (C) and Deputy Prime Minister Carmel Sepuloni (L) are briefed at Waka Kotahi Auckland Transport operations room ahead of Cyclone Gabrielle's arrival on February 12, 2023 in Auckland, New Zealand. New Zealand's national carrier canceled dozens of flights Sunday as Aucklanders braced for a deluge from Cyclone Gabrielle, two weeks after a record-breaking storm swamped the nation's largest city and killed four people. Air New Zealand said it was canceling all domestic flights to and from Auckland through midday Tuesday as well as many international flights. The carrier said some international routes would continue operating, although flights might need to be diverted from Auckland. "Please do take this seriously, we do expect severe weather is on the way," New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins told reporters.
New Zealand's Auckland braces for ex-cyclone Gabrielle impact

Residents of New Zealand's biggest city were urged on Sunday to prepare for the impact of a storm that buffeted Australia's Norfolk Island overnight. Gabrielle, downgraded to a sub-tropical low pressure system from a Category 2 cyclone, passed over Norfolk Island, its "most destructive winds" missing the island, the Australian outpost's emergency management authority said. Wind and rain were "starting to spread across NZ from the north", with a 133 kph (83 mph) wind gust reported overnight on the country's North Island, MetService said. The storm was on track to lie off Cape Reinga at the North Island's north end on Sunday afternoon, after moving away from Norfolk Island, MetService said. "There is still considerable clean up to be undertaken and it may take a while for services such as power to be restored," Emergency Management Norfolk Island said.
Gerard Piqué went Instagram-official with 23-year-old Clara Chia Marti after his split with Shakira. The pop star released a diss track seemingly aimed at Piqué in January, which broke a YouTube record. In August, photos published by the Daily Mail of Piqué and Clara Chia Marti seemed to confirm the couple's romance about three months after his split from 45-year-old Shakira. On January 15, a video appearing to show Piqué driving a Twingo to a press conference was posted to Twitter. In November, the former couple reached a custody agreement in which their two children would move to Miami with Shakira.
BARCELONA, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Colombian pop star Shakira has reached an agreement with former partner Gerard Pique over the custody of their two children following the break-up of their 11-year relationship earlier this year, Shakira's representative in Spain said on Tuesday. Shakira Mebarak, 45, and FC Barcelona defender Pique, 35, were together since 2011 but never married. They met shortly before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when he featured in the music video for Shakira's "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", the tournament's official song. The custody agreement was reached one week after Pique announced his imminent retirement from professional football and departure from FC Barcelona. Prosecutors claim she failed to pay up to 14.5 million euros ($14.48 million) in tax on income earned between 2012 and 2014.
FC Barcelona soccer star Gerard Piqué announced his retirement on social media Thursday at the age of 35. The defender, who recently split with Colombian singer Shakira, has won the Champions League three times with FC Barcelona and the World Cup with Spain in 2010. David Clapp | Stone | Getty ImagesNew Zealand plans to tax agricultural emissions — including those related to the burps, urine and dung from livestock like cows and sheep — in a move its government hopes will help the country meet climate change goals. "This is an important step forward in New Zealand's transition to a low emissions future and delivers on our promise to price agriculture emissions from 2025," she said. Agriculture plays a major role in New Zealand's economy, including exports, but it accounts for a considerable chunk of the country's emissions. In the consultation document, authorities said greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture — carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane — were responsible for more than half of New Zealand's gross emissions. According to the document, carbon dioxide stems from urea, while nitrous oxide comes from livestock dung and urine.
